Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Karim Massimov visited the newly opened Republican Physics and Mathematics School branch in Astana.
“Our school is a branch of the Republican Physics and Mathematics School (RPMS) in Almaty. We’ve timed this event to coincide with the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence. This was made possible thanks to the government programs built up over a quarter century. Much work has been done by the Ministries and other institutions, such as NIS [Nazarbayev Intellectual School] in Astana and RPMS in Almaty. Eventually, RPMS in Astana will become a center of physics and mathematics of Kazakhstan. We focus on physics, mathematics and computer programming. We have a very good teaching staff in all subjects – experienced teachers with 40 years of experience, as well as young teachers-Bolashakers [Bolashak scholarship holders]. Subjects are officially taught in Russian and Kazakh, but in fact – in three languages, because English is essential in the scientific field. In total we have 58 teachers.”- said Astana RPMS’ director Gabit Bekakhmetov.
Over 40 years, more than 7000 students have graduated from the Almaty school. Many of these graduates are well known in Kazakhstan and beyond. Among them are Chairman of the Presidium of the National Chamber of entrepreneurs of the Republic of Kazakhstan “Atameken” Timur Kulibayev, Head of Astana International Financial Center and ex-Chairman of the National Bank of Kazakhstan Kairat Kelimbetov, former Minister of Environment and Water Resources of Kazakhstan Nurlan Kapparov. Yandex founders Ilya Sagalovich and Arkady Volozh also studied here.
